Question: Dihydroxylation of Alkenes can be produced by alkaline KMnO4,then why do i use expensive & toxic OsO4?
By: Sandeep Biswas     Date: 2012-12-26

Answer: KMnO4 based reaction conditions are harsh compared to that of OsO4 base systems. KMnO4 based reactions require stoichiometric amount of the reagent but OsO4 can be used in catalytic amount in the presence of terminal oxidant such as NMO, H2O2, etc. So far the asymmetric version is found to be successful with OsO4.
