Question: both variance and standard deviation exactly mean the same thing " it tells how much is the value deviated from mean value " but what exactly is the difference between them
By: pradeep madhava     Date: 2012-07-19

Answer: The difference can be explained from different perspectives and two such cases are explained below. 1. Standard deviation is expressed in the same units as that of the data but not the variance. 2. When sample parameters are used as the estimates for the population parameters, even after applying the Bessel’s correction the standard deviation is a biased estimate where as the variance is an unbiased estimate.
