Summary:

The workshop on NPTEL started at 9.40 AM with invocation song.

Dr. M.L.Stephen Raj, Coordinator NPTEL of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, welcomed Prof. K. Mangala Sunder, NPTEL Coordinator IIT, Madras. He mentioned about ministry of HRD which initiated this NPTEL programme.  The need for collaborative work of students and faculty was also addressed. He praised Prof. K. Mangala Sunder for expanding this learning for Science, Engineering and Technological streams. He also added that NPTEL enhances the quality of teaching and learning.

The Chief Guest, Dr. S.Balakrishnan, Principal of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, after extending warm welcome and referred NPTEL as an eye opener for entire nation which got shape due to hard work of IITs. His talk focused on the aims of NPTEL which enables the availability of course materials for various streams and also keeps updating the same. He briefed about the intranet facility of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College and made a request for considering as a nodal center for NPTEL. He also expressed his interest of conducting NPTEL workshops for 3 and 5 days.

Professor K. Mangala Sunder after welcoming all the participants expressed his consent for conducting NPTEL workshop in future based on the interest of the management of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College.

  • His talk gave an insight on the need, genesis and development of NPTEL. Since he pointed out a survey saying that 25% of World's under 30 years population will be in India, his talk centered around nourishing the young brains on enhanced learning. They should be trained on service oriented technologies, international research and industrial exposure. The aspects like what to teach, how to teach and learning from mistakes of experienced minds are the basis of NPTEL. The development of 100-200 core engineering course materials, large number of digital libraries, online PhD and virtual technical university were set as goals of NPTEL.
  • He also emphasized that NPTEL is not designed with the objective of replacing regular class room teaching.
  • He stressed on the importance of quality education since learning and getting employed is beyond borders.
  • He outlined about technology enabled learning, technology mediated learning, technology enhanced learning (TEL) and   technology assisted learning.
  • He informed that students can post their queries, add course materials and share their suggestion through social network called Classle.                

He gave a practical demo of the usage of NPTEL website.

Group discussion: The entire participants were divided into three groups and were asked to discuss on the following topics:

  • What are the various technological tools for teaching and learning that can be used to supplement NPTEL?
  • Campus level/Environment

What could be done at the campus-level for increased use of the NPTEL material? What is working? What is not working? What are your suggestions for creating TEL environment at your campus?

  • Participation

Dr. D. Selvathi, Dr.B. Bose and Dr B. Rajendran of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College headed each groups. The groups after discussion came up with manysuggestions.

The gathering was provided with certificates and TA reimbursement, followed by the collection of feedback forms and lunch session.               

In the post lunch session , Prof. K. Mangala Sunder addressed a group of students and faculty of Mepco Schlenk Engineering college. The participants were second and third years of different technology and engineering streams.
